As part of our continuous efforts to make the processes at the .LV domain Registry (NIC.LV) more effective and efficient, a survey was sent to all .LV registrars (156 partners in total) to review their customer data renewal procedures.
The survey aimed to find out:
It’s the obligation of the .LV Registry and registrars to update or amend all incomplete or inaccurate data of domain name holders. The results of this survey will help NIC.LV to develop an efficient and convenient way to cooperatively ensure high accuracy of the data.
The survey consisted of several questions on customer data entry, verification, and updating procedures. Altogether 40 responses were received from 20 Latvian and 20 foreign registrars.
NIC.LV regularly receives up-to-date information from the Register of Enterprises of the Republic of Latvia (LRE) on the recent changes of Latvian company names and/or addresses; therefore, the most important thing was to find out what did our registrars think about the following questions:
The results indicate that 55% of the surveyed registrars do not want NIC.LV to update their customer data! However, there is a big difference between the preferences of the Latvian and foreign registrars:
All foreign registrars indicated their customers’ wishes as their top priority; therefore, they do not want to update any data without their knowledge or request, even if the customer has provided inaccurate or incomplete data.
However, almost all (90%) of the Latvian and foreign registrars would like to be informed about their customer data inaccuracies.
Therefore, the next question for the registrars using the domain name administration tool NIC EPP (16 in total) was:
Although the majority of respondents 43.75% preferred to include information in the daily NIC.LV email report, it is also important to consider the widely differing views of the Latvian and foreign registrars on this issue:
The majority of the surveyed registrars update their customer data in the registry only after the customers themselves have informed of the change. The customer is the determinant and the top priority for the registrars, so without their knowledge or specific request, the registrars do not want to make any changes to their data even if the customer has provided incorrect or incomplete information.
In some cases, the survey results showed a significant difference between the preferences of the local and foreign registrars, for example:
Thank you to all the respondents! NIC.LV will consider all your comments and views to develop an efficient and convenient way for us to cooperatively ensure high data accuracy.
